UPC/GTIN codes for marketplaces: buy right, once

Amazon requires a product ID (GTIN — UPC, EAN, ISBN, or JAN) for new listings in most categories, and it verifies UPCs against the GS1 database: codes that don't match the brand get listings removed and can cost you selling privileges — which is why the cheap third-party 'UPC reseller' codes are a trap, and Amazon says so explicitly. Buy from GS1 directly: a single GTIN costs $30 one-time with no renewal; a company prefix (for catalogs) starts at $250 for 10 barcodes plus annual renewal. For a handful of products, singles are almost always the right buy.

Singles vs prefix, and the exemption path

The math is simple: below roughly a dozen SKUs, $30 singles beat a $250+renewal prefix; catalogs and brands that need their prefix embedded across variants graduate to tiers ($250/10 up to $10,500/100,000). The third option sellers forget: GTIN exemptions — Amazon grants them for genuinely unbranded/handmade goods and approved brands, which turns the whole question into an application instead of a purchase. Private-label sellers registering a brand usually still want real GS1 codes: they're the identity layer every other marketplace and retail channel will also ask for.

Common questions

My reseller UPCs worked for years. Why change?
Enforcement is retroactive-capable: Amazon's policy says non-matching UPCs can be removed at any time, and relisting an established ASIN under a corrected code is painful. Migrating before enforcement beats after.
